Interview with an Intern (from the Kingsland Library Post)

by KLB Summer Intern, Sara Crowell

Working at the Kingsland Library this summer has been a blast; but, to be honest, I was extremely nervous about working as a summer intern at the KLB and even more nervous about the ladies I was going to be working with for my eight-week internship. (Not because I had ever had a bad experience with any of the staff; but, simply because this was my first job and I did not really know what kind of expectations they would have of me.) I will also admit that I was extremely people shy and had not done well interacting with anyone too much older than a teenager like myself.
As it turns out, all my apprehensions and nervousness were for nothing. All of the staff at the Kingsland Library and even many of the volunteers were very grateful for my work and were kind and thoughtful towards me. My time on the KLB staff has been a wonderful learning experience for me. I have learned to talk to people effectively, be more confident in my own choices, and to be responsible and dependable when others need me.
My favorite part of working at the Kingsland Library would definitely have to be a combination of working with patrons at the circulation desk and gaining the experience needed for me to maybe become a true librarian myself (learning how the system works, the different rules and regulations, and how to take fines and book suggestions) if I choose that career path in my future.
Even if I do choose a different profession, I will always treasure the opportunity that I was given because it has reconnected me with my love of reading and has given me something positive in my life to hold onto even when I was not feeling the best.
I hope that I will have an opportunity like this again in my future because this summer has truly been one I have appreciated and loved.

Back in the "olden days" when I was a kid, all teenagers had to have some sort of summer job...even if it meant working around the farm or ranch or for a relative. Our parents knew that it helped us learn valuable life lessons about responsibility and self-worth. Self esteem doesn't come from being told how wonderful you are; it comes from realizing that you are able to do things on your own without your parent's help. This teenager has learned a valuable lesson this summer, and she has grown up more than she ever could have by just hanging around with her friends. Good for her, good for the Kingsland Library, and good for our community.
